Moolank (Root Number) is the simplest calculation in Vedic numerology — it only looks at the day you were born, not the full date. Even so, one small detail (what happens with two-digit days) trips up more people than the rest of the method combined.

What is Moolank?
Moolank, or Root Number, reflects your core personality — the instincts and natural tendencies you lead with before life experience adds its layers. It is derived only from your day of birth (1–31), regardless of the month or year.
Because it uses less information than Bhagyank, Moolank is considered a narrower, more immediate reading — closer to how you naturally react, rather than the broader arc Bhagyank describes.
How to calculate your Moolank
- Take just the day of your birth, as a number from 1 to 31.
- If it's already a single digit (1–9), that is your Moolank — no further steps needed.
- If it's a two-digit day (10–31), add the two digits together.
- If that sum is still two digits, add its digits once more, until you have a single digit from 1–9.
Worked examples
Example 1 — already a single digit
Born on the 6th → Moolank = 6. No reduction needed.
Example 2 — one reduction
Born on the 24th → 2 + 4 = 6 → Moolank = 6.
Example 3 — two reductions
Born on the 29th → 2 + 9 = 11 → 11 is still two digits, so reduce again → 1 + 1 = 2 → Moolank = 2. Days like 19 and 29 are the ones people most often get wrong.
Why Moolank never keeps a master number
Bhagyank can stop at 11, 22 or 33 and keep that as a master number. Moolank never does — it is always reduced all the way down to a single digit from 1 to 9, even when an intermediate sum (like the 11 from day 29 above) matches a master number. If you see an 11 or 22 partway through a Moolank calculation, keep reducing.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating an intermediate 11, 22 or 33 as a master number — Moolank has no master numbers; always reduce fully to 1–9.
- Using the full date instead of just the day — that calculation gives you Bhagyank, not Moolank.
- Stopping after one reduction for days like 19 or 29, where the first digit sum is still two digits.
Moolank vs Bhagyank, in short
Moolank uses only your birth day and reflects your core personality. Bhagyank uses your complete date of birth and reflects your broader life path. They can land on the same number or different ones — both are normal. For a fuller side-by-side, see our guide on Bhagyank vs Moolank.
Using your Moolank
Your Moolank is a quick way to check in with your instincts — the reactions and preferences that tend to show up before you've thought something through. Pair it with your Bhagyank for a fuller picture of both your daily nature and your broader direction.
Frequently asked questions
Can Moolank ever be a master number (11, 22 or 33)?
No. Unlike Bhagyank, Moolank is always reduced completely to a single digit between 1 and 9, even if an in-between sum happens to be 11, 22 or a similar number.
Is Moolank more important than Bhagyank?
Neither is "more important" — they describe different things. Moolank speaks to instinct and core personality; Bhagyank speaks to your broader life direction. Most readings use both together.
Does the date format (DD/MM vs MM/DD) change my Moolank?
No. Moolank only ever looks at the day-of-month number, so it is unaffected by whether your birth date is written as DD/MM/YYYY or MM/DD/YYYY.
